A Microbiology Lab for Gimbie Adventist Hospital
Until 2015 Gimbie Adventist Hospital (GAH) was located 275 miles from the nearest microbiology laboratory. But now GAH can provide these lifesaving laboratory services to it's community thanks to two generous donations to Here4Them. A storeroom at the hospital was converted into a nicely functioning lab. It has all the basic equipment necessary to grow cultures and perform antibiotic sensitivity tests. Now the doctors no longer have to guess which antibiotic to prescribe resulting in a more rapid healing of the patient. This rapid healing lowers the cost to the patients also!
This laboratory is equipped with the minimal equipment to perform these tests but it is saving lives daily. All the equipment necessary to start this lab was purchased within Ethiopia. |

The female patient shown below had a staph infection and had been hospitalized. Her condition was worsening until she had a culture and sensitivity test performed. She was then prescribed the correct antibiotic and her condition started to improve within 24 hours. Photos used with permission.
This patient shown below also had a type of Staph infection. The time difference of the two photos on the left are 24 hours. What a difference a drug sensitivity test can make.
